Research of the Tenth Grade Students At SMAN 2 xxxxxxx in the Academic Year
2009/2010). Thesis. Surakarta.
English Department of Post Graduate Program, 2010.
The students of the tenth grade at SMAN 2 xxxxx had a problem dealing with writing class. The problem was they
could not generate their idea into well-structured composition. It was caused
by the lack of writing skill as a result of lack of chance to practice writing
in English. The research was carried out to maximize the students’ ability to
write English. Hopefully, semantic mapping strategy can improve writing-text
skill of the tenth grade students at SMAN 2 xxxxxx.
The data were collected through several
techniques. The qualitative data were collected through the students’
participation during the writing class. The observation is on the students’
participation during the discussion and the implementation of semantic mapping
in writing class. The data were supported with the informal interview after the
discussion and the post test. It is carried out in order to know the
effectiveness of semantic mapping in the writing class and the weakness and
problem with it. The quantitative data were gained through writing assessment.
The aspects to be analyzed were content, organization, vocabulary, syntax, and
mechanic.
The research finding shows that semantic
mapping gives some positive effects. The first is the improvement of students’
motivation in learning English especially writing. The second is the change of
the students’ attitude toward the teaching learning process. The third is the
improvement of the students participation during the writing class, and the
last is the improvement of students’ writing-text skill.
The research implies that semantic mapping
can be an alternative technique to improve the students writing skill.
Therefore, it is recommended that English teacher should apply it. The
institution should also socialize it. The last is for the other researcher to
develop the aspect of writing skill that has not been developed in this
research.
